Monolingual & Bilingual Reading Comprehension (MBRC) Project

The long-term goal of the Monolingual and Bilingual Reading Comprehension (MBRC) study is to examine the structure of reading comprehension in middle and high school students and to determine which cognitive and linguistic factors contribute to reading comprehension outcomes. Results will provide a sound basis for the development and testing of reading comprehension assessment, instruction, and intervention for older students and bilingual students.

In these studies we build upon the longitudinal work of the Language and Reading Research Consortium (LARRC) that followed two groups of children from four states from preschool (PK) through grade 3. The first group spoke English when they entered PK and the second group spoke primarily Spanish (dual-language learners or DLLs). Our team will assess these children during their sixth-grade and ninth-grade years in areas of oral language development and reading. Results from these studies will positively impact our ability to identify children at risk for poor reading comprehension, even before they learn to read, and will provide a sound basis for the development and testing of reading comprehension assessments, curricula, and interventions for older students and DLLs.

Arizona State University partners with Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri and Lancaster University in Lancashire, England on these research studies.
